WHY Yakumama MATTERS

Harming the forest
is harming ourselves.

Yakumama is art activism: a way to make the life of the Amazon, and the threats it faces, felt in the body.

It brings art into partnership with Indigenous forest and water protectors, inviting the public to see the forest as part of their own future.

FROM A DISTANT ISSUE TO A PERSONAL ENCOUNTER

You protect what
you feel connected to.

Visitors first spend time with the forest: its images, sounds, stories and living presence. Only then does extraction interrupt the journey. The experience gives that destruction an emotional context.

The final mirrors turn the question toward each visitor. Yakumama does not prescribe an answer. It asks what we are willing to protect, and invites a conversation that continues outside the exhibition.

THE MEDICINE OF THE FOREST

A world within
a living world.

Ayahuasca is one of many master plants explored through the exhibition. The story approaches these plants through the knowledge and relationships held by forest protectors: as teachers, and as part of traditions of healing and care.

Healing here is a relationship—with oneself, with community and with the Earth. Protecting the forest also means protecting the living knowledge it holds. The artwork invites visitors to encounter that connection through image, voice and sound.

FOREST & WATER PROTECTORS

Voices from
living territories.

Manari of the Sapara Nation, Alex Lucitante of the A’i Cofán, and Rosita of the Shuar bring Icaros to the project. Their contributions connect the artwork to people protecting forest, water and the knowledge held within them.

A PUBLIC WORK

The forest belongs
in the conversation.

Free admission is central to the exhibition. Funding and venue partnerships support access, so the experience can reach beyond those already close to environmental work.
